Sagres culinary journey began in 1976 when co-founders Antonio DaSilva and his brother-in-law, Amadeu Cerqueria, acquired the restaurant’s current location at 177 Columbia St. Their passion for Portuguese cuisine, cultivated in the esteemed kitchens of Lisbon and various regions of Portugal, came to life as they embarked on this venture following their immigration to the United States in the wake of the 1974 Portuguese revolution.

Having relocated to Lisbon at a young age, Antonio DaSilva swiftly ascended the ranks to become one of Portugal’s foremost chefs. His culinary prowess led him to the helm of prestigious establishments, including renowned hotels and restaurants. Notably, he held the distinguished position of head chef at the internationally acclaimed Estoril Casino in Portugal before embarking on his culinary journey to the United States.

Within a short period, Sagres has successfully solidified its standing as an iconic establishment in Fall River, earning steadfast loyalty from the local community and drawing patrons from around the world.

The restaurant has proudly received numerous accolades, consistently securing top positions in various regional ‘Best of’ lists and has also been featured on the PBS  show “Maria’s Portuguese Table”. Additionally, it has garnered recognition from esteemed publications such as The Financial Times of London and United Airlines, further solidifying its reputation as a culinary destination of excellence.

Regrettably, an electrical fire broke out on July 7, 2013, spreading from a second-floor apartment above the restaurant and ultimately engulfing the entire structure.

Following an extensive nearly two-year rebuilding phase, a revitalized Sagres restaurant reopened on June 16, 2015 at the same location, showcasing resilience and a commitment to its enduring legacy.

Antonio DaSilva passed away in 2019 at the age of 84.
Today, the legacy of Antonio DaSilva lives on through the dedicated stewardship of his sons, Victor DaSilva and Manuel Ferreira, the current head chef at Sagres Restaurant. Together, they continue the tradition of offering authentic Portuguese cuisine that has garnered a widespread and enduring appreciation.

Join us at Sagres to experience the legacy of Antonio DaSilva—a legacy that transcends time and welcomes everyone to savor the cherished flavors of authentic Portuguese cuisine that has become a beloved staple for locals and visitors alike.
